Traveling to Spain? Make sure you make your way to the countries vibrant city, Seville! Seville is the capital of Andalusia in southern Spain, and is a city bursting with culture, history, and vibrant energy. With its stunning architecture, lively flamenco, and delicious cuisine, it’s the perfect destination for a day trip. If you only have one day to spend in Seville, I’ll give you all the deets on how to make the most of it below!
My husband and I were traveling to another part of Spain, Marbella, but we wanted to see Seville before heading that way for the main part of our trip. We both have family history in Spain and my husband still has family living there so we were excited to meet up with them! Unfortunately, we only had one full day to explore. We arrived on the last evening of La Féria, which is a week long celebration in Seville right after Holy Week. There was food, music, women dancing in traditional flamenco dresses, and individual tents for families to host their extended family and friends. It was a beautiful celebration and we were so excited to see what it was all about even if we had just been traveling for 24 hours! We were exhausted but made it just in time to explore!
Where to Stay
We decided to stay at the historic Hotel Alfonso XIII and it was the most magnificent hotel I have ever seen. Staying at the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville was such a luxurious experience. You feel like you have been transported to a world of elegance and grandeur. The iconic hotel was built in 1929 and boasts stunning Moorish architecture, opulent interiors, and meticulously landscaped gardens. From the moment you step into the lavish lobby, you feel the historic charm and its modern comforts. The prime location near Seville’s major landmarks was also a plus! We walked everywhere because the hotel is right in the middle of the city!
Here are some of the things we did while we were there.
Explore the Heart of Seville
1. Seville Cathedral and La Giralda
You can start your day at the iconic Seville Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world. Marvel at its vast interior, which includes the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Don’t miss climbing La Giralda, the cathedral’s bell tower. The view from the top offers a breathtaking panorama of the city. You do need to get tickets ahead of time and make sure you are there on time! The line to get it does get long! It might be smart to attend a mass if you are not able to get a ticket. There are also additional smaller cathedrals attached to the sides of the main building. We were able to go into one of these while walking around the city, without a ticket for the main building and even the smaller side church was a cathedral in itself!
2. Real Alcázar of Seville
Next, you could head to the Real Alcázar, a stunning royal palace originally developed by Moorish Muslim kings. We spent our entire morning here before heading to lunch. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts exquisite Mudéjar architecture, lush gardens, and intricate tile work. You can spend hours wandering through its courtyards and gardens, imagining life in this historical masterpiece. Give yourself an entire morning or afternoon so that you can really take it all in and get your pictures! Don’t forget to buy your tickets ahead of time and grab the audio box on your way in for an audio tour around the grounds!
Stroll Through Barrio Santa Cruz
3. Barrio Santa Cruz
Before or after visiting the Alcázar, you can take a leisurely stroll through the charming Barrio Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter of Seville. This neighborhood is a maze of narrow, winding streets, whitewashed buildings, and hidden plazas. You feel like you are in another time and it is so charming. You can also stop by the Plaza de Santa Cruz and the picturesque Plaza de Doña Elvira for a taste of traditional Sevillian atmosphere.
Savor Andalusian Cuisine
4. Tapas at a Local Bar
For lunch, indulge in some of Seville’s famous tapas. We stopped by a popular spot for some drinks and food with some family from town! We had a traditional lunch, spending a few hours enjoying tapas and good conversation! Don’t forget to try some classics like jamón ibérico, croquetas, gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), and tortilla española (Spanish omelette).
Experience Seville’s Cultural Scene
5. Plaza de España
After lunch, we made our way to the Plaza de España, located in the María Luisa Park. This grandiose square, built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, features a stunning semicircular building with colorful tile alcoves representing each of Spain’s provinces. You can rent a rowboat to paddle around the central canal for a unique perspective or just take it the sights by walking around the grounds.
6. María Luisa Park
Then, we just took a relaxing walk through the lush María Luisa Park, adjacent to Plaza de España. This expansive green space is filled with beautiful gardens, fountains, and pavilions. It’s a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the serene surroundings. There was a pigeon park and the most beautiful bougainvillea’s.
Discover Flamenco and Art
7. Museo del Baile Flamenco
Dive into the passionate world of flamenco at the Museo del Baile Flamenco. This museum, dedicated to the art of flamenco dance, offers interactive exhibits, costumes, and daily live performances. It’s an excellent way to understand and experience the soul of Andalusian culture.
Enjoy Seville’s Nightlife
8. Dinner and Flamenco Show
For dinner, there are so many options! Treat yourself to an Andalusian feast at one of Seville’s many excellent restaurants. Try places like Eslava or Casa Robles for a memorable dining experience. I suggest having an outdoor meal along the river on the westside! It definitely passed the vibe check. Afterwards, you can immerse yourself in the fiery rhythms of flamenco at a tablao. Venues like Tablao El Arenal or La Casa del Flamenco offer authentic flamenco shows that will leave you spellbound.
9. Rooftop Bar for a Nightcap
The fun doesn’t have to end if you are looking for more to do! You can end your night with a nightcap at one of Seville’s rooftop bars. Terraza Hotel Doña María offers stunning views of the illuminated cathedral, while Pura Vida Terraza provides a more laid-back vibe with views over the Giralda and Seville’s skyline.
What to Wear in Seville in Spring
- Layering is Key: Spring weather in Spain can range from cool mornings and evenings to warm afternoons. Layering allows you to adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day. I mostly wore pants/jeans with a shirt and brought a sweater with me.
- Comfortable Footwear: Spain is known for its charming, cobblestone streets and historical sites that require a fair amount of walking. Bring comfortable shoes suitable for walking!
- Sun Protection: Even in spring, the Spanish sun can be strong, especially in the south. Bring sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen (always!)
