Welcoming a baby girl into your family is a joyous occasion, and designing her nursery is one of the most exciting preparations you can make. A pink nursery is a classic choice that evokes warmth, comfort, and love. Here’s a guide to help you create the perfect pink nursery for your baby girl.
There is a lot of inspiration on Pinterest which is where I went to find ideas and ultimately decided on a “vintage pink and gold” theme.
What I used:
- Wall Color: “Intimate White” by Sherwin Williams
- Crib: Namesake Vintage Gold “Abigail” crib from Pottery Barn
- Light fixture: Pottery Barn or Wayfair
- Closet system: Ikea Pax System
- Rocking Chair: Rowe Furniture Swivel Glider
- Dresser and side table: Thrifted!
- Mirror: Hobby Lobby
- Rug: Wayfair
- Basket: Homegoods
- Curtains and shade: Amazon
- Choose the Right Shade of Pink
The first step is selecting the perfect shade of pink. I wanted a light subtle pink and went with a color called “Intimate White” by Sherwin Williams. You would never guess by the name of the color but it is definitely pink! It is the perfect shade of soft pink in my opinion, leaving the room bright and airy still.
Consider the mood you want to set:
• Soft Pastels: These create a calm and serene atmosphere, perfect for a restful environment.
• Bright and Bold: More vibrant pinks can make the room lively and cheerful.
• Blush or Dusty Rose: These sophisticated shades add elegance and can grow with your child.
- Mix and Match Textures
Adding a variety of textures will make the nursery more visually interesting and cozy. I added a traditional style rug but chose to keep it pink and beige to continue the color scheme. I also added a girly wallpaper with a cherry blossom vibe! There are many options on Amazon, Wayfair, and Anthropologie. Wallpaper is in right now and it definitely makes the room feel more complete. My husband also added wainscotting throughout the entire room to give it an elevated feeling and to make it feel even more like a princess room!
• Plush Rugs: A soft, fluffy rug in a complementary color can add warmth.
• Textured Wallpapers: Choose wallpapers with subtle patterns like polka dots or florals.
• Wall Paneling: Wainscotting, wall paneling or crown molding can add such an elevated architectual look.
• Soft Bedding: Look for high-quality, breathable fabrics for crib sheets and blankets.
- Furniture Selection
Opt for functional yet stylish furniture that complements the pink theme. Remember you can use things for dual purpose. For example, opt to use a dresser as a changing table. This way, you can use it for years to come. A crib is probably the only necessity and there are so many options from glam to natural looks. Don’t forget to make sure it is greenguard gold certified which means it is their products are made with safety in mind, minimizing pollutants. A rocking chair is a great addition to a nursery as well but there are so many options! There are rockers, gliders, swivel gliders, recliners, automatic recliners and some that even have USB chargers! I opted for a swivel glider and use an ottoman to put my feet up when I need to but some people do find the need for the reclining option.
• Crib: A white or natural wood crib works well with pink walls. Convertible cribs can be a good investment as they grow with your child.
• Changing Table/Dresser: Choose a changing table with ample storage for diapers, wipes, and other necessities.
• Rocking Chair or Glider: A comfortable place for feeding and bonding is essential. Look for one with soft upholstery.
- Personalized Touches
Adding personalized elements makes the nursery unique and special. We had a friend create art with our baby’s name on it, it is made of wood and has colors to match her room. Consider Etsy for personalized decor! I also thrifted a beautiful gold vintage painting and we also had a friend create a personal painting. All of these add a special touch that make it feel more like home. I also have added some things from our travels.
• Name Wall Art: Custom-made wall art with your baby’s name adds a personal touch.
• Handmade Quilts: Family heirlooms or handmade blankets can bring warmth and history to the room.
• Custom Mobiles: Consider a mobile with a pink theme, featuring stars, hearts, or animals.
- Storage Solutions
Keeping the nursery organized is crucial. I had my husband build and put together a closet organization system. We used part of the pax system from Ikea to provide drawers, shelves and still left room for hanging space. Bins and baskets are great for storing blankets and toys and give a cute look. If you plan to have books in the bedroom, you can also get display shelving on amazon. There are clear acrylic ones and wooden ones so you can find something to easily match your style. You can add more stylish storage by putting baskets on shelves which helps to keep the space looking neat.
• Baskets and Bins: Use woven baskets or decorative bins for toys and clothes.
• Shelving: Wall shelves can display books, toys, and decorative items without taking up floor space.
• Closet Organizers: Maximize closet space with organizers for baby clothes and accessories.
• Bookcase: Adding a bookcase, big or small, can offer storage for any items such as books and toys! A great way to keep the room tidy. Don't forget to secure to the wall.
- Decorative Accents
Small details can make a big difference:
• Wall Decals: Easy-to-apply wall decals in pink and gold can add whimsy and charm.
• Curtains: Light-filtering curtains in a coordinating shade of pink can enhance the room’s ambiance. There are great options on amazon that you can even customize. Don't forget to add black out on any design!
• Lamps and Lighting: A beautiful chandelier or a cute lamp can add a soft glow, perfect for nighttime feedings.
- Safety First
Ensure your nursery is a safe haven. I made sure all my baby items were green guard certified, meaning it was made with low chemical emissions. I also made sure to get the best mattress I could find. The safest and best reviewed baby mattress is the newton mattress. I opted for this one because it is breathable, washable, and safe. I also got their crib sheet to go on top. I have been very pleased with it and would recommend it.
• Secure Furniture: Anchor heavy furniture to the wall to prevent tipping.
• Non-Toxic Paint: Use eco-friendly, non-toxic paint for the walls and make sure the pieces you buy are green guard gold certified.
• Safe Sleep Environment: Follow guidelines for crib safety, such as a firm mattress and fitted sheet.
- Think Long Term
Design with the future in mind. Using furniture and decor that can be used as your child grows helps to lower cost over time. It also saves you time!
• Adaptable Decor: Choose decor that can be easily updated as your child grows.
• Adaptable Furniture: Choose furniture that can be used for years to come. Consider a dresser that is used as a changing table and later, a traditional dresser. Also, they have cribs that can transition into toddler beds.
• Quality over Quantity: Invest in quality pieces that will last.
